Why CBD for Veterans?
Veterans have unique health concerns. After serving in active duty, many veterans find themselves struggling with issues like chronic physical pain and mental trauma. Some veterans find that traditional treatments for these issues, such as prescription pain medications or antidepressants, do not provide them with the relief they need. Or, they find that the side effects of traditional medications outweigh their benefits. When seeking a holistic alternative to traditional prescription medications, many veterans find relief in cannabidiol (CBD).
While the research on CBD is still in its early stages, there have been studies that suggest CBD may alleviate pain, calm inflammation, improve the mood, and more. There’s also quite a lot of anecdotal evidence on the health benefits of CBD, especially among veterans. Many veterans find that CBD hemp oils and other CBD products help to ease issues like chronic pain, PTSD, and poor sleep.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), 9.1% of veterans experience severe pain on a regular basis. Many veterans find that CBD is an effective pain management tool and often prefer it to traditional prescription medications, such as opioids, since CBD does not come with the risk of severe side effects. The existing studies on CBD and pain management suggest that CBD may work well to relieve pain because of how it interacts with the nervous system and the immune system. The cannabinoid CBD appears to engage receptors within the nervous system and the immune system, which provides pain relief.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a very common condition within the veteran population, can cause a wide range of issues. Veterans suffering from PTSD can struggle with anxiety, difficulty coping, negative changes in mood, trouble sleeping, severe emotional distress, and more. While PTSD is a complex issue that often requires a multi-pronged treatment approach, the current research on CBD for PTSD suggests it may help improve PTSD symptoms. Studies have shown that CBD may help reduce nightmares and flashbacks, reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, help with sleep issues, and disrupt long-term fear memory processing (which can help reduce both stress and anxiety).
Chronic insomnia is highly prevalent among veterans. Veterans may experience insomnia on its own or coupled with PTSD. Insomnia, characterized by the inability to fall or stay asleep, is stressful to experience in the moment, especially when it persists over time. Then, it can also lead to daytime dysfunction, making one’s waking hours much more challenging. Many veterans who suffer from insomnia find that CBD oils and other CBD products ease their symptoms, improving their sleep health and overall quality of life. The current scientific research on CBD and sleep quality also suggests that CBD may improve sleep, with multiple studies finding that CBD may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia.
